You and I have corresponded and I'm really appreciative of the information you provided. While I can't help you with the question about Mary Dawson, I can say with reasonable certainty that William Lewelling wasn't a son of Jesse, which leaves Jonathan as his father. If William married Mary Dawson about 1759, then chances are their marriage took place in Anson County since both William and Jonathan are found there 1763.

William and Mary (Dawson) Lewelling had a son named Jonathan. According to Jonathan Lewelling's Bible, he was born April 7, 1769 in Randolph County and died June 4, 1848 in Randolph County. He married Jane Cashatt. While he says he was born Randolph County, that county wasn't formed until 1779 from Guilford. Guilford was formed 1770 from Orange and Orange was formed 1752 from Bladen. So it would appear by 1769, William and Mary were living Guilford/Orange.

In 1787 there was a Jesse Lewellen who lived and died in Anson but he was from Virginia and there's no record of Jonathan nor William ever being in Virginia so chances are Jesse was from another family, possibly the one from Prince Edward County, VA.

William and Mary Lewelling were Quakers if this helps at all. And I still wonder if Ruth, wife of Jonathan, might have also been a Dawson.

There's a site on the internet that gives a little history about French Church in Charleston.
