Charlene,

I’ve rooted around (virtually) in the counties around Branson, looking for possible kin to my mother’s Arkansas-born maternal grandmother, Mary Jane (Lewallen) Jackson. I discovered much information on some Lewallens who could have been her distant cousins, but no close kin. See my 6 September 2008 post, “Lewallens in Boone Co, AR & Taney County, MO,” on this GenForum.

One of the tools I used in my searches was the Missouri State Archives Missouri Death Certificates database (http://www.sos.mo.gov/archives/resources/deathcertificates), which currently holds death certificates from the years 1910 through 1961.

Out of curiosity, I did a quick search of the death certificates database and didn’t find any Lewallen death certificates from Stone County.

However, I did find this household in an LDS FamilySearch transcription of the 1910 census of Ruth Township, Stone County, Missouri:

MILLS James Head 44 Male MO
MILLS Annie Wife Female 32 IA
MILLS Marule Son Male 12 MO
MILLS Mary A Daughter Female 11 MO
MILLS Dora Daughter Female 8 MO
MILLS Charlie Son Male 5 MO
MILLS Clyde Son Male 2 MO
MILLS Marnie Father Male 74 TN
MILLS Hannah Mother Female 64 TN

I suspect the Clyde Mills in this household was the individual who would later marry Walcie Mary Moore.

Based on James Mills 1910 household, I did some searches through the Missouri Death Certificates database.

There is a death certificate in the database from Stone County for farmer James Madison Moore (1868-1910), who was born in Stone County. It lists his farther as Marvel Mills (b. TN) and his mother as Hannah McGinnis (b. TN). The Informant was Marvel Mills of Reeds Spring, Missouri. His place of burial was the Yocum Pond Cemetery.

There are death certificates in the database from Christian County for:

Tennessee-born farmer Marvel Mills (1835-1913), a son of Joseph Mills (b. TN) and Mary Cloud (b. TN). The Informant was Mary Martin of Spokane [Christian County], Missouri.

Tennessee-born Hannah Mills (1846-1917), a daughter of James Maginis (b. TN) and Sarah Dalton (b. TN). The Informant was Mary A. Martin of Spokane, Missouri.

Widowed housekeeper Mary A. Martin (1869-1952), born in Missouri, and a daughter of Marvel Mills and Hannah McGinnis. The Informant was Sam Martin of Spokane, Missouri.

All three death certificates listed places of death in Christian County’s South Galloway Township. All three listed the place of burial as the Martin Cemetery.

Finally, I found a death certificate from Barry County, Missouri, for Noah Columbus Mills (1875-1955), whose usual residence was Blue Eye, a town in Stone County. The death certificate listed his usual occupation as “Sawmill.” It listed his parents as Marvell Mills and Hannah McGinnis.

There are probably more death certificates of interest to you in the database. It’s a goldmine of genealogical information. I passed this information to you on the slight chance you’re not already familiar with the Missouri Death Certificates database.

Happy hunting.

Regards from Virginia,

Clete
