To start with my 2nd great grandparents are Andrew Taylor Luark (also spelled Lewark at times) and Eliza Vandyne (Vanduyne, Vondine and Vandine 1850 Wabash County marriage liscense.) Andrew died at July 13 1860 in Wabash County (letter written by his father to another son shortly
after Andrew died and two Wabash obituaries.) At the time he was Justice of the Peace, worked as a salesmen for a pen company, was a salesman for a boot crimping company and was a salesman for Home Mutual Insuarce (1976 Bicentenial Edition ofWabash County History pg 81) and I believed he dabbled in real Estate and was also active in the Temperance movement and the Sons of Temperance. He didn't have a will but from the looks of his estate papers (30 pages long) it looks as though he may also have been
running a store. He has reams of paper, boxes of pens and everything else one might find at a store. The papers also showed person after person that owed him money which makes me believe that if he was running a store he was
giving lots of credit.
As far as Eliza she shows up in the 1850 Wabash County census at the age of sixteen with her parents which would mean she was born in 1834, in the 1860
Wabash County census it shows her as being born in 1828 and 1870 in 1836. I have her signature from her marriage license and on Andrew's estate papers that are kind of questionable to me as being the same. She also signed one
document in the estate papers with her mark and I know she couldn't read because the sheriff that served a summons to her in 1860 said he served it by reading.
I have no information on her from the time the summons was served in 1860 until the 1870 Wabash County census. A cousin of mine in Texas who has researched the
Luark-Lewark family for 60+ years believes that Eliza married Joseph Way. I have their marriage license and it shows this couple were married August 24 1862. Then I have a marriage license showing Eliza Way and Isaac Jacobs being married September 12 1863 but this one has over age written on it.
Checking both signatures on the documents shows the name Eliza as being the same person that singed both documents. Now I have another marriage license showng Eliza Jacobs and Nelson Burris being married February 8 1869 in Wabash County.
The 1870 census just adds to the puzzle because it shows her as Eliza Lewark. There is also a Rose Lewark who was born about 1862 living with her. None of the males including my great grandfather were old enough in 1861-62
to have a child. I have no idea who Rose is but I'm thinking that she may have been born Rose Way and the census taker either being lazy wrote the household down as Lewark because that's what he knew them as or someone else
that knew the children figured Eliza was a Lewark as well, but that is just my speculation.
As far as burials all I can tell you is according to one obituary Andrew was "buried by the order of the Temple of Honor." The Temple of Honor was a Temperance organization and I believe operated out of what was then Manchester Indiana. Eliza on the other hand I haven't a clue as to when she
died or where she and Andrew are buried but I was thinking both were buried in Hanna Cemetery without headstones and never moved to Falls cemetery.
