James Gilbert McCoy son of Thomas McCoy m Mary Lewis
My great-great grandfather was James Gilbert McCoy. It has been handed down that he left home to serve in the civil war(for the north) and because of that he was unable to go home to his family after the war. Here is what little we know:
he was full or 1/2 indian
he stood over 6'5" and mentioned that his brothers were all over that height
talked about a cousin by the name Jack Johnson/Johnston or Jones

Enlisted in the Civil war in Rock Island Ill. was a member of the Clarke County Legion after ( WILSON POST 323, HOPEVILLE, IOWA Chartered 24 May 1884-Disbanded 1893 - McCoy, James Gilbert, b 1 Jan 1846, Green Co, Ind, d 24 Jan 1940, Des Moines, bur West Des Moines, father Thomas F, mother Mary Lewis, wf Mary Evva O'Dell, b 1855, m 5 Oct 1871, Lincoln, Ill, enl Rock Island, F/B 3 Reg U S Inf.) Lived in Creston, Union Co Iowa. moved to Des Moines in 1915? and buried at Resthaven in West Des Moines, Polk Co Iowa.
married Mary Eva Odell (12/04/1856 - 10/22/1950) on 10/05/1871. born in Indiana, but her family was from Sandusky, Ohio.
If anyone has any idea of how I could find James Gilbert McCoy's parents it would be very appreciated.
