Thank you for the reply. I'm not saying you are wrong I'm just respectfully disagreeing. :) There may have not be tribes that lived in Maryland but that does not mean that individuals didn't. Sometimes the most obvious answers aren't the most obvious. Chief Little Bear didn't have to necessarily live with them or she with him. It's very hard to prove someone is a native without documentation. could she have been a bastard child and that's why she took the Cole surname? Is it possible that they moved back and forth? Maybe Elizabeth conceived Sarah in a different state and ventured back to Maryland..There are hundreds of possibilities (of which many of them I'm sure you already thought of)I'm trying to think outside the box. And I know you will disagree with me but that's okay :) My husband (who studied Native American Studies at WVU for 6 years) assures me that at the time of Chief Little Bears birth (1815), Cherokee occupied Virginia and the Southern parts of WV and some were "stragglers" that ventured into Maryland (Which the latter I know for a fact because my family already has documentation of that on my grandmother's side. I would be happy to provide documentation if I'm able to get it from my grandmother. She's been snowed in for a while!)He also tells me that Cherokee are a sister tribe to the Iroquis and they used much of the same language and writing systems which is just one proof that they are related tribes..I have a couple of links that one of the professors at WVU likes to refer to sometimes when working with his students: http://www.nanations.com/linguistic/iroquoian_family.htmhttp://www.nanations.com/linguistic/iroquoian_family.htm and this one from a geneological website: http://www.accessgenealogy.com/native/tribes/cherokee/cherohist.htmhttp://www.accessgenealogy.com/native/tribes/cherokee/cherohist.htm and lastly, http://www.aaanativearts.com/cherokee/index.htmlhttp://www.aaanativearts.com/cherokee/index.html I hope they will be of some use to you. If you have any questions about Native Americans, I'm sure my husband can answer any questions you may have. He's done research for his studies many years on the different tribes and how they relate to each other (among other things). Right now he's studying and researching the Inuit population and will be heading to Alaska next month on a two week venture. Should be interesting! He's really excited about it! As far as the Knotts go, i would LOVE to see more information on them. I know there is native american there too. A native was married into the family..Luckily we have pictures of her which serves as a starting point for documentation. Her name was America Jane. My grandmother is Emma Jean Luzader but she was named by her elder from North Carolina. Her name is Moonflower. :) My grandmother has everything I would need on her family. With the help of the geneological society and her tribe in NC, they were able to pinpoint all the finer details. I hope to get with her soon and compare some notes! I apologize this for being so long. I tend to ramble too much! ha ha! I look forward to hearing back from you!
