John and Peter LICHT/etc. immigrants to America
Posted by: Diana Gale Matthiesen (ID *****0513) Date: February 20, 2003 at 00:23:29

Below is my extraction of the surname LICHT and its variants, with given names Johannes/Johann/Hans/John/etc. and Peter, listed on Broderbund CD-354: "Passenger and Immigration Lists Index, 1538-1940, from Gale Research, Inc." The CD is just what it's title says it is: an index to sources. In many cases, there is further information on the CD and still further informaion on the original source.

This extraction is not exhaustive for all variations of the name. I only extracted entries that are, or appeared to me to be, German. I did not extract the LIGHTs who immigrated to New England, Virginia, or the West Indies, as those emigrants embarked from English ports and are almost certainly English LIGHTs, not German LICHTs. (There is a special case of a large number of Palatine Germans who were imported to New York in 1710, after having gone from Rotterdam to London in 1709, many of whom later moved to PA. I will deal with them in a separate message.)

The entries below may be immigration records, naturalization records, or "first appearance" records (e.g., land records or tax lists). I have listed the entries in chronological order, followed by the source (author year:page; kind of record), the full citations for which are listed below the entries. Many immigration events have been published repeatedly, so I have single-spaced the entries I suspect refer to the same event (to the same primary document). In most cases, it would be necessary to consult the original index, if not the original source as well, to be certain whether two seemingly identical entries are, in fact, the same record of the same person.
