My family are Scottish from the original "legates" who were appointed by the pope to negotiate treaties between the Norwegian and Scottish kings. 1100's is the first (Randolph the legate) etc. Later they continued to be appointed to clergy positions for pay, in Aberdeenshire generally. In 1615 with the civil war they favored the nobility, and when they lost Scotland's Parliament decreed the burning of the manorhouse "Legatsden". There's a start!
