John Lightbody, b.1866 - Scotland
Hi Everyone,
My great grandfather was John "Jake" Lightbody born Oct.7, 1866 in Wigtownshire Scotland. His mother was Sarah Jane. Jake, his wife Caroline "Muir" Lightbody and their newborn daughter, Elspeth, arrived in America June 21, 1888 on the ship Circassia. They basically came to join the Muir family, all of whom lived just north of Scranton, Pennsylvania.
When Elspeth got older she visited her Grandmother Lightbody often in Scotland and perhaps it was Sarah Jane who gave her the information I have on a small piece of paper otherwise, I have no idea where it came from. It reads:
Lightbody in 13th century Britain was "Leoht-bodig", translated from Anglo-Saxon English, this surname complimented the ancestor as being "a man with an active body".
The Lightbody armorial shield granted at Glasgow, Scotland, is blue, engraved with a gold stripe down the center. On the stripe are two silver stars, two silver crescents and a red rampant lion.
I am, Sarah Elspeth (Sally) Fisher.
Thanks
