1938 Obituary of Samuel C. Lightner:

....."Mr. Lightner was a son (the youngest child of 10 children) of Benjamin and Jane (Gillan) Lightner and was born at Monroe Furnace, Stone Valley, near Pine Grove Mills on August 15, 1847. His parents were pioneer settlers in that valley.......he first joined the Methodist Church known as Meek's Church, in Centre County, when 13 years of age (1860)......he is survived by one brother, Matthew Lightner of Monmouth, Illinois, who is 94 years of age and the last of the immediate family"......

Benjamin and Jane are in the 1850 Census for Jackson Twp in Huntingdon County. Benjamin was born about 1803. In the same township and in the same 1850 census are Mathias Lightner, born 1812 (wife Mary) and James Lightner (born 1827, wife Margaret and he is believed to be an older son of Benjamin and Jane). As Benjamin was born in 1803 near Pine Grove Mills, the only Lightner in the 1810 Census in that area is an " A. Lightner ( has it mistakenly transcribed as "M. Lightner".). I must assume that Benjamin is a son of either Adam or Mathias Lightner, both of whom were sons of Mathias Lightner Sr. Can anyone set me straight as to whom were the parents of Benjamin Lightner? Thanks, Sue
