Abraham Like was born 1790-1800 census records say PA. he died 1834 St Louis, MO. He first married in Jefferson Co., KY 1816 and second to Elizabeth Grimes about 1821. Their son Gideon P. Like b. 17 Oct 1822 married Mary Walker. I do not know what the P stands for. Mary Walker Like died Oct 1872 of smallpox Baden, St Lois, MO. Their son, my grandfather, Samuel A b. 1868 St Louis was put in a orphans home in St Louis and taken out by a Samuel Butcher and his wife Lucinda. The Butchers lived in Lineville, Iowa.
When my grandfather was put in the home his last name was thought to be Light. I did find him in the 1870 census with his mother and sisters in Baden which was a german settlement and with a accent the mistake was made on his last name. I do have a copy of the marriage application and it states his parents were Gideon Light and Mary Walker. I searched many many census microfilm of MO, KY, IL and could not find a Gideon Light, but did find Gideon Like. I also wrote many years ago to the court in St Louis and they did not have a adoption record for Samuel. I may write the court again as I now know the name of the couple who adopted him. The 1880 census does say adopted son.
