It is very rare that I come across anyone with the last name Brebes. Brebes is my maternal grandmother's maiden name. I know that her father, Manuel Brebes immigrated to America by stowing away on a grain ship. Through various means, many I think he had help of some of his friends who came over years before, he found his way to Moro Bay, California. Here he married a young girl, I think she was 16 when they got married, named Anna Simas. He had something like 12 children with her. One of them was my grandmother Eva. Some of his descendants still live in Moro Bay, CA to include my granduncle Henry if memory serves me correctly.

I am assuming he came over from the Azores because that is where I have been lead to believe the Simas came from and family legend has it that he was friends with the Simas before they came over to America. So, logically speaking... you follow where this is going.

Now I don't know if ggranddaddy Manuel had any siblings, but there are so few Brebes that I almost have to assume that your Brebes and mine had to be kin. But how they were kin I have no idea.

Don't know if this helps at all.
