The name Butler seems to have been interchangeable with Boteler for at least 200 years. The story that came down with my father-in-law was that at the time of Cromwell, those of the family loyal to the King remained Botelers and those loyal to Cromwell changed to Butlers.I have since seen references which go back earlier, but regardless of when, they both have their root in Boutillier, the Norman word for "butler" who was something like the head of a lord's household. You can find references to this on the web under Butler and probably Boutillier also.
Your info is very interesting - the first reference to the Edward I have seen. However, the Edward who married Anne Lingan had only the three children I think I mentioned to you - Martha, Elizabeth and Edward. This is verified by his will. He died in Calvert Co. about March 1718. There was reputedly a land grant in Prince George Co. (?) to 3 Botelers, Henry, Charles & Rupert but I have not had a chance to go there to check it out.
If you feel you can share your source I would be most grateful and perhaps I can share some of my information, which is principally Boteler.
Many thanks
Elizabeth
