I found the death records of Howard Lingo's parents, which explains why he and his brothers were accepted at Girard College. His father, William W. Lingo, grocer, died on Jan 29, 1894, and is buried in Vault, Bethel Methodict Episcopal Church, Philadelphia. His mother died, May 4, 1896, and is buried in Fernwood Cemetery, Lansdowne, Philadelphia Cty, Pensylvania. This explain why he and his brothers were orphans.
