Richard Linthicums in North Carolina & Kentucky 1774 - 1880
I am attempting to trace the first few generations of the descendents from the marriage of Richard Linthicum and Mary Sherwood who moved to NC from Talbot Co., MD in the late 1780’s or early 1790’s.My aim is to gain a set of facts that will improve my understanding of my own ancestors who I believe also come from this Linthicum/Sherwood marriage. If the information below reveals any connection to any readers, I would appreciate hearing from you.
One of the challenges in tracing Richard and Mary’s descendents involves the “Richards” that I find later not having quite enough facts to draw too many conclusions
We know that Richard and Mary had a son Richard from Matilda Badger’s book.If he was born in Maryland as family lore goes and obviously before his mother died, he had to be born before 1790.These are all the facts I am aware of.The “hash” marks on early Guilford County, NC censuses for the senior Richard Linthicum’s household do little to help us other than indicate he had one son born 1774 or after.Daniel is head of his own household in this same census.Other records indicate that Richard’s brother, Thomas, was born about 1784; so……. I don’t really know what happened to this Richard.
Matilda also indicated that Richard & Mary’s son, Daniel, had a son named Richard and that he went to Kentucky. On Nov 2, 1831, Guilford Co., NC marriage records show Richard O. Linthicum marrying Mary Work. This is an aside from the major goal of this query but I have never seen any reference to Daniel’s wife. There are many Osments, Ozments, and Osburns in Guilford Co. and I’m just wondering if this “O” is a clue to Richard’s mother’s maiden name.
1850 Census for Campbell Co., KY District 2: Richard Linticomb 51 (abt 1799) born NC, wife Elizabeth 50 (abt 1800) born NC, child Margaret, 4 born KY.There is a Stull family living with them.
1860 Census for Campbell Co., KY, Grant’s Lick Post Office:R. O. Linthicum 29 (abt 1831), wife Mary 28 (abt 1832) and daughter Mary 3 (abt 1857) are listed. All are shown as born KY.
1870 Census for Campbell Co., Grant’s Lick Pct.: Richard Linthacum (transcribed as Smithham by Ancestry.com) 71 (abt 1799) born NC, wife Elizabeth 61? (abt 1809) born NC.
1880 Census for Gubser, Campbell Co.,: Richard Linthacom 79 (abt 1801) Minister born NC, parents born NC, wife Elizabeth 67 (abt 1813) born VA, parents born VA.There is a boarder/domestic servant Carrick Francis female 19 living with them.
These are all the records I have been able to find within Ancestry.com for these “Richards”.There are just enough contradictions here to make me hesitant to make too many conclusions. If any reader has or finds additional information to remove these doubts or add new facts, I would be most happy to have the information.Of course, I would be happy to share any other information I have on this and associated families.
