Lipmans in Australia

I'm trying to find out any imformation on my family history. Unfortunately my Grandfather, John Bede Lipman died when I was young and my family is very unhelpful, so I know absolutely nothing of my heritage. My family has been in Australia long before the world wars, but I would like to know how they got here and were they of Polish or German origin? We are catholic, but I know that the name is mainly jewish (there are not many Lipmans in Oz!), so I want to know when the family changed and why.

Any help would be you can see I am very ignorant! Please email me.
