Your Joseph may well be a member of the Lisman family who came to America from Germany around 1785, landing at Philadephia. From there they moved west to KY and Indiana. I believe some of them did go to Missouri after that. Try the LDS family files on line and see if you can find your folks. Lisman (originally Lismann) is not all that common a name, which makes things a bit easier.
