2nd Lt James Sturgis was the son of Colonel (brevet Major General) Samuel Davis Sturgis who was the Commanding Officer of the 7th Cavalry, though he wasn't at the LBH.
James was born Jan 24 1854 in Albequerque. His mother was Mamie T Sturgis. He was assigned to Co M, but was on duty with Co E, when he went missing. He was never found, though a monument was erected on the battlefield (possibly for his parents sake) and there is a marker for him there today.
