There is some speculation about this man. A few of the indians present at the battle gave chase to one soldier who fled the battlefield on horseback. As the story goes the soldier's horse, being bigger and stronger than the indian ponies, began to gradually pull away. The indians were just about to give up and turn back to the battle when the terrified soldier withdrew his revolver and shot himself in the head. 2LT Sturgis's body was never found so it has been surmised that this was perhaps him. After the battle, blood stained clothing with his name on it was found in what had been the indian encampment. It would seem logical that whoever this soldier was who shot himself when nearly being the only escapee, perhaps the pursuant indians "counted coup" and scalped, pillaged, etc. this young man's body, leading to the clothes later appearing in the camp? Who knows? Whoever he was, it would have made for a fascinating mystery solver if only he hadn't shot himself.
