Parchment : 2 sheets 48cm x 31cm with wax seal and revenue stamps.

Summary of contents
Elias LOCK of South Petherton, Somerset. Retired Baker.
Joseph READ of Hinton, Saint George, Somerset. Miller.

The contract relates to a dwelling house and garden in Seavington Saint Michael, Somerset, in the Manor of Hinton Saint George.

It begins by reciting a 99 year lease on the property given in 1837 to Samuel Paul, but it appears that the lease could terminate earlier after the death of Samuel Paul's two sons, Samuel and Joseph.

Later, in 1837, the lease was sold to Elias Lock, who, in 1851 took out a 50 insurance policy on the life of Joseph Paul (who we are told is still living).

Elias Lock is now selling the residue of the lease to Joseph Read, together with the insurance policy for 145.

The original parchment document relating to the above is displayed on PHOTO. Use surname search on FamilyChest website to locate.

Full transcription/explanation available upon request, or you can buy the original document if you belong to the family.

FamilyChest saves historical family indentures from the shredder!
