Myrna,

Putting a message here that I sent to a different researcher...perhaps it will help or maybe confuse, or better yet help one of us find a connection.

Joe
Rose,

This is a few years later but I may have found a connection between Martin Van Buren LODER and my family. In the 1870 census Martin LODER was living with my ancestor Phoebe Sherry MURPHY MAY and her sister Rachel MURPHY as you can see from what I have cut below Rachel MAY, Phoebe’s daughter married a man named TOMPKINS and ended up naming there son Martin Van Buren TOMPKINS…perhaps there was some funny business going on or perhaps our Martin LODER is not related at all but the use of VAN BUREN as a middle name seemed rather interesting. Understandable it may be just the fact that everyone wanted to name there kids after the 8th president. Any light that can be shed on the LODER living with the widow Phoebe MAY would be helpful…I just assumed he was a Free LODER. <Smile> Joseph W. May Jr.

B. John MAY, Jr., b. c1792 in NJ, d. 1860-70. He m. Phoebe Sherry MURPHY 6 Sep 1818. She was b. 21 Jan 1800, d. 11 May 1875. She was the daughter of John MURPHY. They were in the 1830 census of Pittsgrove Twp., Salem Co., NJ. They were in the 1840 census of Pittsgrove Twp., Salem Co., NJ. Living with them was a female, b. 1780-90.

They were in the 1850 census of Pittsgrove Twp., Salem Co., NJ where he was a farmer. Living with them was Jacob MAY, b. c1827 in NJ, whom we believe to be John’s nephew; along with Phoebe’s father. They were in the 1860 census of Pittsgrove Twp., Salem Co., NJ, where he was a master farmer with real estate valued at $3000 & personal property valued at $100. Living with them was their daughter, Rachel.

Phoebe was in the 1870 census of Pittsgrove Twp., Salem Co., NJ with real estate valued at $600 & personal property valued at $300. Living with her were Rachel MURPHY, b. c1800 in NJ with real estate valued at $500 & personal property valued at $100. Also living with them was Martin LODER, b. c1860 in NJ. Their children were:

1. Mary MAY, b. 12 Jul 1818 in Pittsgrove Twp., Salem Co., NJ, possibly out of wedlock.
2. Margaret MAY, b. 2 Aug 1820 in Pittsgrove Twp., Salem Co., NJ
*3. Jonathan D. MAY, b. 4 Mar 1823 in Pittsgrove Twp., Salem Co., NJ
4. Lewis MAY, b. 17 Jan 1826 in Pittsgrove Twp., Salem Co., NJ
5. Sarah MAY, b. 4 May 1833 in Pittsgrove Twp., Salem Co., NJ
6. Rachel MAY, b. 6 Sep 1838 in Pittsgrove Twp., Salem Co., NJ. She m. _____ TOMPKINS. Their son was Martin Van Buren TOMPKINS. Rachel & her son were living with her parents in the 1860 census.

I am looking for descendants of William Loder, b. 1802 in NJ<Coshcoton Co. Ohio < Cass Co. NE where he is buried in the Sheffer Pioneer Cemetery. We are looking to update the Sheffer Pioneer Cemetery book, which has extensive entries on the Loders as well as descendant trees through the 1970's. Please contact me at iwroho@aol.com if you can contribute new information or photos of the pioneers, or would like to order a copy,
William Loder's children were John Paul Loder (m. Emeline Tiger) Martha (m. John Sheffer), Lewis (m. Alice Walker), Aaron Coffee (m. Huldah Maston), William, Martin Van Buren Loder (m. Racel Ann Loder (m. Martin Kirker) Nancy Jane Loder (m. Elic Chalker Coleman, Jr.), Samuel Humes Loder (m. Mary Elizabeht Laughlin, Hattie Long and Marian Wolfe), Mary Ellen Loder (m. The book has been typeset but will include corrected information in endnote form.
