First, Upton R. Loman Sr. was born March 14, 1833 (not 1883) in Marion Co., VA (now part of West Virginia.) I don't know who his parents were. He moved to Texas and settled in Fayette Co. in the mid 1840s. As a teenager, Upton fought in the Mexican War. Upton's first wife was Mary Louise Rabb, daughter of Cat. Thomas J. Rabb. Her grandparents (William Rabb and Mary Smalley Rabb) originally came to TX as part of Stephen F. Austin's colony and were part of the "Old 300." Mary Rabb Loman died in 1857. In 1859, Upton married Lavinia Ellen Ross, daughter of Robinson Ross and Sabra Smalley. Lavinia was born July 6, 1838, in Vermilion Co. IL. (Her grandfather was Freeman Jasper Smalley of Ohio and Illinois.) Lavinia and Upton named their first daughter Mary Louise after Upton's first wife. Upton Loman died June 5, 1901; Lavinia died October 12, 1938.
Mary Louise ("Molly") and S.J. Stapleton had two children:
Eula Vertner Stapleton b: June 23, 1891
Temple Stapleton b: Jan 22 1888; m: Dora Schroeder b: Nov 12, 1892.
I have a lot more on this family, especially the Smalleys, if you would like to send e-mail me. I did not know your grandfather, but I rember your great-grandmother Vertner and your great-uncle Loman quite well. Vertner's brother Temple Stapleton was my grandfather. Hope to hear from you soon.
