I found this on the Read GenForum:

Posted by Tammy Read Corley on September 04, 1998 at 15:16:45:

I am looking for information on William Grant Read. The storie goes that he came from Germany as William Grant Reed. Lived in Alabama untill his death in 1950. In the war he was confused with another William Reed so he changed the spelling to Read. He was married to Josephine Cooley. She died around 1929. They had four boys. As they got older they all took on different spellings. Reed,Reid and Read. My grnadfather, LOMAN [Read], kept the Read spelling. As far as I know all the other brothers moved out of state. If anyone has any information on William Grant Read or Josephine Cooley I would love to hear from you.
