My Grandfather changed his name from Longo to Long in the early 1900's. I only know that he was of Sicilian ancestry. His origial name was Aro Longo. Our family history was lost due to his un-willingness to discuss it. We live in South Carolina but some of my Grandfather's relatives lived in PA. and NY. He would only say that he changed his name to be more "American". Hope this doesn't make things more confusing for you.
