I'm certain that Benjamin Franklin Look and Mary Franklin Look are brother and sister.
Mary was born March 17, 1803 in Chatham, Columbia Co., NY. Thomas Look was in Stillwater, Albany Co., NY in the 1790 census and then in Columbia Co., NY in the 1800 NY census. Thomas's family is the only Look family in Columbia County in the census of 1800. I believe Chatham Township was created around 1800 and borders Kinderhook Township.
Mary Franklin Look married Asher Chapin October 18, 1819 in Bath, Steuben Co., NY. I assume that the Look Family moved to Steuben Co. sometime between 1815 and 1819. The date I have for Benjamin's marriage in Kinderhook is January 15, 1815.
Asher and Mary (Look) Chapin had 12 children between 1821 and 1842 and lived in Painted Post. In the late 1840's (before the 1850 census)they moved to Mt. Vernon, Knox Co., OH. Sometime in the 1850's they moved on to Monmouth, Warren Co., IL. Asher died on March 30, 1865 and Mary died on Aug 26, 1883, both in Monmouth IL.
The locations and time periods lead me to the conclusion that they must be siblings. Also every source I find (2 so far) repeat a family tradition passed down from Mary Look that she was a cousin of Dr. Benjamin Franklin.
One source stated that Thomas Look married Mary Franklin daughter of Lemuel Franklin. The only Lemuel Franklin I can find was in Swansea, Bristol Co., MA. Lemuel was the son of a John Franklin and was born c. 1734 (NEHGR 122:23). The only information on Lemuel I found on the "net" doesn't show a Mary as a daughter but does show an Elizabeth (Elsie)who was born September 24, 1767.
I checked the Dighton Vital Records and they had Thomas Look born June 27, 1765 (Book 1:106). He was the son of Benjamin Look and Sarah (Hathaway). There were no birth or marriage records for Sarah and Benjamin in Dighton. There were Hathaway's in Freetown in Bristol Co. and maybe something will turn-up there. I believe that this Thomas Look and Lemuel Franklin could be the ones I'm looking for. Dighton and Swansea are neighboring towns and Lemuel's Elizabeth and Thomas are the right age.
