Mattie Barrington, according to those pesky family stories, came to texas in her late teens after having been caught delivering medicine to confederate prisoners in a camp in northwest arkansas. she had been allowed to visit her 'cousin' in the prison camp on many occasions,and wrapped laudanam into her long elaborate hair style to give those in the worst pain. she was not arrested, but was ordered to leave the state, so she 'refugeed' to Texas, ending up in Clarksville. she must have been quite a catch for old Dr. Look, because she was considered a great beauty. i have a picture of her when young and that part is certainly true. thank you so much for this-i never knew when E.S., Jr. was born. he may have left home because he did not like his stepfather.
