In 1981, a Mr. Robert Latchaw of Cincinnati, OH sent the following information to my cousin.

***George W. Latshaw***
b. PA 1784. Said to have been buried in Grinnell, Iowa. Married in 1810 in Allegheny Co, PA to a Melvina Wesley who died in 1867. Married a 2nd time to a Katherine born 1786 in VA. She was living in 1860 in Ripley Co, Indiana. This George Latshaw is believed to be the son of John Latshaw, son of Joseph Latshaw 1730-1820 buried Fayette Co, PA.

***George Washington Lotshaw***
Appears to be the fist Lotshaw. b. 8/6/1814 in PA. Appears in the 1840 Ohio census Monroe Co, Malaga Twp as George Latshaw (male 20-30), a female (20-30) which must be his wife Esther Black born 6/12/1817 in Ohio and a male (under 5) apparently not William W. John Lotshaw (oldest son) born 2/16/1841 but another son who died in infancy. [MY NOTE: letter not clear. Original line looks like "apparently William John Lotshaw" The "not" "W." and "(oldest son)" were added later by Mr. Latchaw.] He had two daughters before 1840 but aren't listed. They could have been w/relatives. George Washington Lotshaw moved to Ripley Co, Indiana in 1846 and was a farmer. He was in the Civil War & died 6/22/1862 from wounds suffered therein. Buried in New Washington Twp. Cem. Elrod, Indiana. He was one of nine children of George Latshaw. His brothers Valentine & David, and sister Elizabeth also moved to Ripley Co, Indiana. The others might have stayed in Monroe Co.

My grandmother was Neenah Jean Lotshaw. Her parents were Frank Wesley Lotshaw & Olga Hajek. (The line is up on the LDS site, minus my grandmother's name) Mr. Latchaw also forwarded information on the Lotshaw/Hajek family.

Olga Hajek d. 1912?, bur. St. Paul, MN.

Siblings of Frank W. Lotshaw include:

Info on name origin: The original Latshaw name when in Switzerland was spelled Loetscher. In Germany it was spelled Latschar. In America it became Latshaw primarily. Mr. Latchaw found about 15 variations in census records including Latsha, Latchaw, Lotshaw, and Latschaw.

Remember that all of the information I have shared here was dug up BEFORE the computer age. It's probably more accurate than a lot of the information floating around now...but it still might have errors! PLEASE USE THIS INFORMATION AS A GUIDE ONLY. Doublecheck everything. The letter was handwritten and I did my best at deciphering, but I might have made mistakes in doing so...or I might have typed in wrong numbers, etc.

Happy Holidays,
Lynette Burks
