I would be careful with the idea any one person "changed the spelling." I've found quite a few by this name (and others) who saw their names spelled differently during their lives. The census might get it one way one year and another way the next.
On the Abraham you mention, what state did he settle in?
James' father seems to be Andrew from PA. I don't know his parents.
I have found record of a Peter and Conrad Louderback who emigrated together in 1737. They also seem to have been in PA at first.
I know of Louderback groups in PA, VA, OH, KY, IN and IL by the early 1800s. How or if they are related still eludes me.
