I would also like to put out there that the theory of the name comes from the Lowther River is only one, There is also a town in that same area (Scottish Borders, Scotland) called Lauder. There are many spellings of the name, and the name's oldest written version is Norman, De Laudre.Since there were few written records you will find Lowder, Lauder, Lavvder (actually two v's instead of a w), Laudre, etc.
As far as I can find, the name was started in the Germanic tribes, but I'm not sure what they would have used during those times, last names weren't "encouraged" until just before the battles for Scottish Independence.
Other theories relate the name to the word for the froth that appears on the rivers rapids around the headwaters of a river. After last names were "encouraged", nobles suggested people adopt names of their craft, their location, or one they simply liked.
I am not an authority, I just wanted to point out that I don't know there is one answer.I would suggest checking on the Lauder clan in Scotland, unless you know for sure your family comes from a branch earlier in the tree (France or Central Europe).
