You can get this article through Interlibrary Loan at your local library, and it will answer some of your questions:
The American Genealogist (TAG) (April 1999, Vol. 74, No. 2) contains an article by Patricia Law Hatcher, “Research and Red Herrings: The Wives of William Luddington [senior] and Matthew Moulthrop of New Haven, Connecticut, with Their English Origins.”
Basically, Ellen Luddington was Ellen Nicholl, whose sister Jane married Matthew Moulthrop, making Ellen a sister-in-law to Matthew, not his sister or daughter, which is apparently where the mixup occurred.
Also, there is a problem as follows:
Martha Rose b. 10 Jan 1667 New Haven County, CT married William Luddington JR abt 1677 in New Haven. She is supposedly the daughter of John Rose and granddaughter of Robert Rose. A source I have says that John Rose was the second husband of Ellen Nicholl Luddington, widow of William Luddington Sr., and the mother of William Luddington JR, Martha's husband. The source also says that Robert Rose and Ellen Luddington are the parents of the above Martha, and if this is true, then Martha and her husband shared the same mother, which I find hard to believe. I suspect that John had a first wife who was the mother of Martha, making John and Martha step-siblings, and that is what I'd like to know. Also, Martha's birth date seems suspect, as she would have been 10 when married and 12 when the first known child was born. Any light that can be shed on this will be greatly appreciated.
