Christopher and George Lugar were among the students who attended the first Sag Harbor school (corner of Madison and Jefferson Streets) in 1795, according to Harry D. Sleight's "Sag Harbor in Earlier Days," pp. 219-220.No Lugar household is listed in Suffolk Co., NY in 1790, but, in 1800, the household of Christopher Lugar of Southampton Twp is made up of two males aged 16-26, a male over 45 and a female over 45.This is consistent with Christopher, his wife, and their two scholars, and the neighbors in the census are Sag Harbor families (L'Hommedieu, Latham, Fordham, Conklin).
There are two Lugar households in Southampton Twp, Suffolk Co., NYin 1810 -- they are close together and the neighbors again appear to be Sag Harbor people. In any event, the household of George Lugar consists of males aged under 10 and 26-45; and females under 10, 26-45 and over 45.And the household of Eunice Lugar is made up of two males under 10, a male 10-16 and a female 26-45.I would speculate that George (the scholar) may have married and now had a family, and that his widowed mother lived with them;it is also possible that Eunice is the widow of Christopher Lugar, but that is again only my speculation.
I collected the above data while searching for information on a William H. Lugar who was born about 1851 somewhere in New York State. Indeed, the 1860 census lists William H. Lugar, age 9, in the household of Benjamin (35, mariner) and Phoebe (26) Hubbard of Southold, NY.The Hubbards had moved to Sag Harbor by 1870, but William Lugar is not to be found anywhere in the census.William H. Lugar is next seen in Amagansett, NY in 1880 -- his wife's name is Ellen, and they married about 1876.
I believe, but cannot prove, that William H. Lugar married Alice Shaw (born about 1857 in Sag Harbor, but lived with her family in Amagansett in 1870).I was wondering if William is related to your Lugars, and, if so, can you confirm (or refute) that he married Alice Shaw? Thanks.
