Peyton Lumpkin 1777-1850+ Pittsylvania Co Va
I've posted here in the past regarding ancestor Nathaniel Lumpkin of Pittsylvania Co Va 1815-1898 buried just north of Danville. Married Judith Bohannon 1818-1877 buried next to Nathaniel.
Neither parentage is known.
Recently came across an interesting deed (Pittsyl Co DB 49:315) that sheds some light. Nathaniel owned 2 tractsof land in his life, a 117 ac tract on which he lived, bought from Azariah Walters in 1759, previously owned by Charles Fontaine/Jeduthan Carter. The other was an adjoining 24 ac parcel bought from
Gideon keen in 1763.
However, in 1845, he signed a trust deed with a Samuel Harraway for that year's crop. In it, he exempted the yearly rent due from him, Nath'l Lumpkin, to Peyton Lumpkin.
It is believed that Peyton Lumpkin, who would have been 37-40 when Nath'l was born, was twice married: once to Mary Gwin, the other to Mary Sutherlin, a neighbor. Peyton and Mary had no other folks/children living with them in the 1820/30 census's. Strangely, in the 1820 census, a Mary Sutherlin is 2 houses down from "Peyton and Mary", with a boy and a girl under 10, three boys between 10-16, and another 16-26. First, am I to assume that Peyton Lumpkins with 2 young wives had no kids? That is the dogma. Number 2-who is this essentially nextdoor neighbor to Peyton and Mary Sutherlin Lumpkin named Mary Sutherlin with 6 kids and no husband?
Is Nathaniel Lumpkins one of these kids next door?
If anyone can shed further light, let me know.
I may post a bit more if a few leads develop.
