He is the elder of two sons, now living, born to James C.and Frances (Londerman) Garton. The father was born inKentucky, and died January 24, 1835, aged thirty-nine. Themother was a native of Virginia, and died December 3, 1854, agedfifty-three years. The subject of this sketch was raised on afarm. After attending the usual subscription school, at the ageof fifteen he was apprenticed to the saddlery trade. Hecontinued in this business until 1862, when he engaged ingeneral merchandising. he first opened a store in Lafayette andafterward at Hopkinsville. In January, 1867, he came to Cadiz,where he has since been engaged in this business. He began atLafayette with a stock of about $1,000, and now carries a stockof about $10,000. He has been acting as Postmaster at Cadiz forthe past fourteen years. On February 15, 1854, Mr Garton wasmarried to Miss Fannie E. White, of Lafayette, Christian County.This lady died November 30, 1860, leaving three daughters. MrGarton was next married at Cadiz, on December 13, 1864, to MissBettie Lindsay, a native of Christian County. Mr G. is a memberof the Masonic fraternity, and of the Christian Church.
1908 Pembroke Journal, Christian County, Kentucky - J. J. Gartonof Cadiz spent last week with J. N. Malcolmn Lunderman near thecity. Mr Garton was raised in this section, his mother havingbeen buried at Old Bethel Church. He is now 81 years of age andconsiders this his last visit to the home of his childhood.

This business he continued till 1881.He with his brother, John J., in 1867, opened a general storehere, and continued his interest in this business till the fallof 1878, when he sold out to his brother, and built his presentspacious store-house, where he with his son, Henry H., is nowengaged in the hardware and agricultural implement business.They are carrying a stock of about $5,000. His son, Henry H.,was married October 7, 1880, to Miss Blanche, daughter of Col.Gentry. She was born in Trigg County. One daughter has blessedthis union. I was taken witha bowell comlaint on the Blue Ridge and I have not gotten clearof it yet. I think the ___ stone (or stove) water gave it tome. I landed at Thomas Jackson's on the 17 day after I lefthome and found all friends well. I met John Jackson on his wayhome 30 miles from Thomas Jackson's with his negroes and he toldme that they had maid (made) a division to the satisfaction ofall partys that wair (were) present and that he thought that Iwould be satisfied with my lot, as it thought that my lot ofnegroes was worth much or more than any of the rest. WidoherCardwell drawed for me. We got Silvey and one negro man-Henry.His age is 24 years old and very likely/lively. I find it isimpossible to sell them for anything like the worth of them inthis country. I will try to bring them with me.
