My father-in-law (deceased at age 85), was born out of wedlock in 1919 to an Italian immigrant woman who lived in Beaverdale, PA. before she moved to New York. He was never told about his true biological father. I was able to find his birth certificate by mere stroke of luck. It listed his father as "Romano Lutzia", an Italian miner (age 40) living in Beaverdale, PA. BUT when my husband had his "paternal" DNA tested, it indicated German descent on the father's side....not Italian. I can't help but wonder if the name of my father-in-law's father was actually Romano Lutz and she wanted it to "appear" Italian by adding the ia at the end of the name.
Does anyone one know if the surname Lutzia is a German name that was shotened to Lutz?
