HENDERSONVILLE Dr. James Dwight Lutz, longtime Hendersonville resident, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2010, at the Life Care Center at Lake Pointe Landing, following a brief illness.

He was born Nov. 3, 1921, the fourth of five children of the late John Forrest Lutz and Zoe Alice Cornwell Lutz. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.

He began his career in medicine on June 23, 1945, after graduating from Duke University School of Medicine. He served his county during World War II, where he was commissioned as a Lieutenant (jg) in the U.S. Navy, until May of 1948. After being honorably discharged, he moved his family to Hendersonville. Having specialized in anesthesiology and family medicine, he established the first anesthesia practice in Hendersonville in 1957. He retired from his practice on Nov. 1, 1989.

His interests included the Kiwanis Club, B.P.O.E. Lodge 1616, his service on the board of directors, including past president, of the Hendersonville Country Club and his many years of service to the First United Methodist Church along with other pursuits, but his greatest joy lay in his family and medicine.

He was a caring, accomplished physician, devoted husband and father, delighted grandfather and great-grandfather, and a wonderful, valued friend.

He wanted that no one ever be in pain or afraid, and in this, he succeeded admirably with those who sought his help. He will be greatly missed.

He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Edna Shaw Lutz; a daughter, Elizabeth Lutz Spoerer, of Charlotte; a son, James Dwight Lutz Jr. and wife, Barbara, of Travelers Rest, S.C.; three grandchildren, Brian J. Lutz, Ashley Lutz Finlay and Sarah M. Lutz; two step-grandchildren, Nicole Duhame and Gregory Nelson; one great-grandson, Jack Finlay; two step-great-granddaughters, Ella and Sophia Duhame; three nephews and one niece.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Barber Christian Life Center of the Hendersonville First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dan Martin and the Rev. H. Alexander Viola officiating. A private entombment will be at Shepherd Memorial Park Mausoleum. The family will receive friends following the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made to the Free Clinics, c/o Dr. Colin Thomas, 841 Case St., Hendersonville, NC 28792 or to the charity of the donor's choice. An online register book is available for family and friends by visiting
