Lynams from West Meathe, Ireland

I just discovered this forum today, while digging around the web looking for clues to finding the Irish Lynam connection. I'll be visiting Ireland this summer for a week, and would like to track down some info on my Great-Great-Grandfather William Lynam, who left Co. WestMeathe sometime in the 1840s (?) I assume it had something to do with the Potato Famine. Not sure who/how many of his family stayed in Ireland, but a nephew came to live with him in Iowa after he was settled. He passed through both Indiana and Wisconsin before settling in Southwest Iowa.
I'm kind of a newbie at this geneology thing so any hints are helpful.
