Rae, In your posting of Dec 8, 1999, you show Sarah Lynde as spouse of Joseph Phillips (1734-1800).Saffold family researchers have a Sarah Lynde married to Reuben Saffold (b. abt 1744 d. 1817) in Wilkes County, GA.
You also suggest this Joseph Phillips was born in Surrey Co. VA.Reuben Saffold was also born in Surrey Co, VA.
A daughter of this Joseph Phillips's son Joseph and Jane Walker , Mary Evelyn Phillips, (the elder Joseph Phillips's grandaughter), married Reuben Saffold, Jr in Morgan County, Georgia in 1811.In 1813, this Reuben and Mary Evelyn migrated to Jackson, clarke Co, AL (then Mississippi Territory)
My reason for bringing this up is to question whether a Sarah Lynde was married to both Joseph Phillips and Reuben Saffold the elder. It seems inconceivable that there were two Sarah Lyndes, contemporaries, both in Georgia at the time they married.
Saffold Researchers have uncovered no hard data establishing Sarah Lynde as spouse of Reuben Saffold, the elder. However, a Sarah Saffold witnessed a deed in 1769 in old Tryon County, NC (present Cherokee County, SC).This Sarah was almost certainly the wife of Reuben Saffold, the Elder, he having just moved into the area with his father, William Saffold I, and mother Temperance Saffold.
Admittedly, there is no hard evidence that this Sarah's maiden name was Lynde.
Alabama historians and researchers of Reuben Saffold, Jr and his wife, Mary Evelyn Phillips, (Reuben was first Supreme Court Justice of Alabama) have all shown Sarah Lynde as the spouse of Reuben Saffold, the elder.
If you or anyone reading this have hard data that would settle the matter of just who Sarah Lynde's spouse was, I would appreciate your sharing it.
And like you, I would like to know Sahah's parentage, date and place of birth, etc.
Thanks so much for your information on the parents and grandparents of Joseph Phillips, father of Mary Evelyn Phillips.
Are you a descendant of Joseph Phillips?
