Brian: The Lynotts were of Norman-Welsh origin and came to Ireland probably in the early 13th century. They were closely allied with the Burkes/De Burgos and traditionally enemies of the Barretts. They were a powerful North Mayo tribe until the 16th century after which they faded into obscurity, presumably because they refused to adhere to the Protestant religion. Many of them—including some of my ancestors—seem to have retreated into the Ox Mountains and some remain there to this day.
