who is John Gray? Browne, Caldwell, Gerrish, Cook, Baton

I am a descendant of Bridget Playfer Oliver through her daughter Christian who married into the Becket family. One of their distance grand-daughters Elizabeth married William Slade and her daughter married John Lander and John Baton a French Huguenot. John Baton and Elizabeth had several children their eldest; Elizabeth seems to have had a child out of wedlock and named him John Gray born 1771. This John Gray is my fifth great grandfather. For years our family has tried to determine who his father is/was. John died in Batavia Republic about 1801 I think aboard “The Margaret”, his wife; Elizabeth Browne Gray died a few years later - they left three young children which I think were raised by the Browne family who descended from the Gerrish, Turner, Archer, Cook, Dean and Bartholomew families.

Looking through Salem records is almost overwhelming for me since I recognize almost every single name as an ancestor.

If anyone wants a challenge, help me discover who the father of John Gray was?
