I wonder if you may have other surnames(Finnish) that connect with your Kotilainen ?
I have that surname connected to my grandparents both born in Finland. One of the other surnames is Kinnunen, and another is Toikanen, but there are others.
Maybe someone in your family married into other surnames.
The above were from Kivijarvi Finland as were my grandparetns who were both born there.
