I have some quite a bit of info on Mabe lines. Mine were mostly out of stokes County, NC, after coming from England to Va. Please contact me if you are interested. There have been many stories of Cherokee connections and secretive families. The Hancock area has a lot of Melungeon families also. There is a great mail list on melungeons run by Nancy Sparks. It is on Topica. You might want to look at some of the info. I do have Native American--Cherokee, verified in my Mabe line. The "look" is so prominent, even 6 generations later. My theory, they had a tremendous amount of cousin-marrying, which i guess just kept it all in the family. This is true at least of the ones in the Stokes area.
