Thanks to Renee Arnold for the information about Sarah Briggs Mabee, who we now know is my husband's great-greatgrandmother. My husband's great-greatgrandfather, George Mabee, died at Gettysburg and is buried in the cemetery there. The enrollment register of the New York 137th Regiment lists five Mabees who enlisted between 18 and 20 August, 1862, including George. He was older (34) than the others. His grandson Ernest was my husband's grandfather. According to the family legends, Ernest's father died young, and after a spell in an orphange, Ernest was rescued by his grandmother, the war widow, and reared by her, for which he was eternally grateful. He often said that she was a wonderful person. Ernest Mabee married into a large family (Smith: at the moment I forget her first name) and they had one daughter, my mother-in-law Cecile Mabee. She married Stacy Rowley, and their offspring is my husband, Stacy Rowley Jr. This family originated in Jamestown New York.
