Hi Tonja My mother was a Maben, so I can tell you that her father, grandfather and great grandfather were Scottish. It is possible that the Scottish family may have gone to Scotland from Conrwall in England, via Wales, but I have not been able to prove this. All my research shows only Scotland, so the Cornish and Welsh connections may just be fable. What is for sure is that the family lived in Scotland and some did emigrate to New Zealand, although not through my side of the family. I am the first to do so. There is certainly NO French connection. I will copy for you an entry in The Surnames of Scotland: MABEN. MABON. Probably from the old British name Maban or Mabon seen in CLACH-MABONSTONE on Gretna Mains, Dumfries-shire. Mabon. son of Mellt, and Mabon, son of Modron, occur in the Welsh Mabinogion (ed Nutt, London, 1904, p139, 162 etc.) William Maben in Galloscheills, 1657 (R.R.M., 11, p149) and JOhn Mabane or Mabone in Conblehouse, 1662 (ibid, 11111, p5, 115). Margaret Meben appears in Bromdykes, 1673 (Lauder), and Thomas Mabone was ordained minister of Gordon, 1685 (Thomson, Lauder, p238). William Maebone in Kircudbright signed the Test in 1684 (RPC., 3, ser. x, p248), JOhn Maban in Conhaith, parish of Carlaverock, 1639, and David Maban, tanner in Dumfries, 1785 (Dumfries) and William Maiben is recorded in Stirling, 1717 (Sc. Ant., vi, p87). Sir John A. Maybin of the Ayshire family, governor of Northern Rhodesia, died 1941. Maebone 1684. My mother was born in Leeds in 1904 and had one older sister, Gladys, born in 1902. They had a brother, Andrew, born in 1900 who only lived a few months. Her father was Andrew Maben, who married a Jessie Midwood in Leeds in circa 1898. Andrew's father was William Maben, his mother was Annie Geddes. There is a Lochmaben in Scotland, not all that far from where the Pan Am ill-fated flight crashed in Locherbie. I hope this helps. John
