I have a book here that tells about this. The MacArthur family in particular. It says that they were orginally from Scotland. They fled to Ireland due to a beheading (this was in the 15 century) of a family member by James I. Most of their estate was then lost. (That would do it.) This book is Irish Names and Surnames by Woulfe O'Lochlainn

This is a very interesting to read. I hope this explains this a little bit.
