Spelling of McArthur

I just heard a story of three brothers that came from Scotland in the 1700's. They agreed to change their names from MacArthur to McArthur with the explicit variation that there be an underscore or 2 dots beneath the "c" to set themselves apart from "those other MacArthurs". Is anyone familiar with this story? That is all the information I have at this time.

Thanks,
Walter MacArthur
