You would want the 25 marker test as a minimum, 37 marker is better. I ordered the 37 marker then upgraded to the 57 marker test. I am waiting for the upgrade results now.
I have been able to tentatively identify my family as having come out of Perthshire, Scotland and also found my GGGGF that I have been seeking for years (yet to be confirmed) as a direct result of my DNA test.
The above site will connect you to the Arthur project which is where the McArthurs fall under. But the base is small. There is a number of groups you can send your results to for a potential match. I found a match for myself at the Sorensen DNA site. I was only able to match to 26 markers because of the difference in markers each projects use. That is why I ordered the 67 marker upgrade. Hopefully I will be able to get a closer match to the Perthshire family.This all sounds complicated but it isn't once you get in wade around a bit.
One thing I might point out right away is that you will need a male member of your family to test for the ydna which is what you will need to trace your McArthur ancestry. It can be brother, father, uncle (with the McArthur name) or a cousin with the McArthur name.
