Info re Grandfather Alexander McAskill born 1865 Glace Bay NS Canada

My great grandfather was ALEXANDER MCASKILL, born July 26, 1865 in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia. He told my grandmother his uncle was Giant Angus McAskill. We have found an old family photo with inscription "Aunt MARGARET MACLEAN". He never spoke of family. One reference of him found in 1910 US Census under the name of Alexander GASKILL, wife Phebe, daughters Mary and Flora. Later there was a son Warren. We have only known the name McAskill. Census lists his entry to U.S. as 1880. Cannot find any other reference to him in Nova Scotia or U.S. He went to mining college and first worked as a mining engineer in Gallup New Mexico where his daughter Mary, my grandmother, was born in 1898. Does any Glace Bay family know of a "lost" Alexander?! Or which of the Norman or Donald MacAskill family from Englishtown moved to Glace Bay?
