MALCOLM MACAULAY was a farmer (probably in Lochalsh or Lochbroom). He married Janet Macpherson and their children included JOHN MACAULAY who was born at Gairloch in 1779 and died in Stornoway on 17 October 1876. He was a general merchant, postmaster, collector of property and income tax distributor in Stornoway (two of John’s brothers were also businessmen in Stornoway). At Stornoway on 4 June 1807 John married Catherine Macrae Maciver who was the daughter of Rev Murdoch Maciver, Minister of Lochalsh, and Mary Mackenzie. She was born at Lochalsh in 1784 and died in Stornoway, Isle of Lewis on 2 July 1871. John and Catherine’s children included:-
1 MARY MACAULAY was born in Stornoway, Isle of Lewis on 7 June 1808 and died there unmarried on 20 March 1885. She kept house for her parents at 31 Cromwell Street, Stornoway at the time of the 1871 census and was living here on an annuity in 1881.
2 Female MACAULAY was born in Stornoway in April 1810.
3 EFFIE MACAULAY was born in Stornoway, Isle of Lewis on 11 November 1811.
4 BARBARA MACAULAY was born in Stornoway, Isle of Lewis on 18 January 1813 and died there on 8 March 1913, aged 100 years. At Stornoway on 18 November 1841 she married Norman Macleod Maciver, a Banker & Shipowner in Stornoway. He was born in Stornoway on 31 December 1814 and died there on 2 April 1879. They had six daughters and three sons).
5 MURDOCH MACAULAY was born in Stornoway, Isle of Lewis on 26 November 1814.
I would be keen to hear from anyone descended from these Macaulays or anyone who can add information on the family. (I am descended from the above Brabara Macaulay who married Norman Maciver).
