John M’Aulay in Cairndow, died 7 March 1732, buried in the family burying aisle of the Kirk of Rhu. His name is again mentioned in the retours, 28 Feb 1734 [Vol 7, Folio 62], and again on 5 May 1757 [Vol. 9, Folio 75] when identifies his relict as Margaret Davie. The Rhu Kirk Cemetery Monumental Inscriptions in Dumbartonshire by John Fowler Mitchell, C.I.E. and Sheila Mitchell (Scottish Genealogical Society, 1969) identify his grave but render his name as “John inllay in Cairndow”, though his marker, a recumbent slab, was quite legible to me when I cleaned the markers in 1989 and later maintained the family burying aisle from 1996 to 1999.

The name Aulay M’Aulay appears in the above retours of 1734 and 1757, and is therein identified as tackmans of Blairvald, whose wife was Elizabeth Jardan, who died 12 Dec 1775 (ae 50). Their marker also lies in the cemetery at the Kirk of Rhu, and is noted as was erected by William Howatt, spirit dealer in Glasgow. Four other names appear on these markers (see #1491): Daniel Mckinlay 23.11.1764 16.6.1818; Alex McAulay 8.5.1764 27.12.1824; Priscilla McAulay 25.3.1824 11.3.1825; Wm H. McAulay 13.6.1829 1.11.1829. The Rhu Parish Registry identifies only the one child of Aulay M’Aulay and Elizabeth Jargon, a daughter, Elizabeth, christened at Rhu, 15 Aug 1760.

An Isobell M’Aulay is also mentioned in the retour of 1757, noted as spouse to James Bogle, Drover, Ardincaple.

A Janet M’Aulay is also noted in the same retour, as spouse to John Arroll, Schoolmaster, Rhu. He was later remarried to Janet Cochran, who died 21 June 1824 (ae 74) and John Arroll died 5 Jun 1817 (ae 79). He is likely the son of the John Arroll, Schoolmaster at Rhu, who was murdered on 2 February 1760, a memorial marker to him stands at Dumbarton Parish Church.

Jean M’Aulay also appears in the retour of 1757, noted as spouse to Duncan Turner, Drover, Duchlage.

Not mentioned in the retour of 1757 but mentioned in the earlier retour of 1734 was Margaret M’Aulay, identified as relict of William Boucher, shipmaster at Greenock. Margaret remarried, to Parlan M’Walter of Auchenvennell, appearing in the retours again on 10 Oct 1761 [Vol 9, Folio 291]. It seems doubtful that she may have been his mother, but may have been a sister to John M'Aulay in Cairndow since she is not mentioned in the latter retour of 1757 among his heirs?
