"He was a tea merchant who lived in St. Ann's Square, Manchester, and was also based at Cateaton Street, London. He was possibly the owner of Manchester's first theatre...he offered his [shorthand]services to the upper classes of London at a guinea a session. He tried to interest the early Methodists in the system and by 1756 boasted 1,500 subscribers."
