Hi all McAuslan researchers.
I know that this forum has had really no activity for quite a while but here goes anyway.
My g-grandmother was Catherine Stirling who married James Scott at Barony, Glasgow 28 May 1854.
Her parents were John Stirling and Janet McAuslan who married at Rhu, Dnb. 30 April 1832 and my Catherine was their only child.
Apparently John Stirling had been married previously possibly to a Margaret Govan and they had three children, William b.c.1815, Margaret and John. This information is derived from John sen. Testament after he died 14 January 1834, all children and Janet were mentioned.
John sen. and William his son were both stonemasons. William married a Margaret Fraser (b.1815 Ardersier, Inv.) at Rhu, 7 June 1835 and remained at Rhu raising eight children.
According to the 1841 & 1851 Census Janet was (BIC) born in county and Helensburgh respectively. Unfortunately there is conflicting information regarding her age and she could have been born c.1796 or as late as 1809.
In order to trace the correct Janet I have charted all the McAuslan families I can from 1760 to 1850 using the Row Parish Register, Kirk Session records and all I can locate in the Statutory Register marriage's/death's from "ScotlandsPeople".
This resulted in two Janet's outstanding but the question now is which is correct (?). The two are :-
Janet b.6 April 1807 to Archibald McAuslan and Isabel Cochrane, or
Janet b.16 September 1814 to Alexander McCaslan and Mary McFarlane.
As my Janet married 1832 both of these would be of marriageable age being 25 and nearly 18.
I have not been able to find either marriage or death listings for either of these two.
My appeal now is does anyone have any relevant information that would allow me to determine the correct Janet. Conflicting information or comment also welcome.
I remain in hope, regards,
